This Fall is full of group rides along the East Coast Greenway — from Maine to North Carolina and many communities in between. We had a lovely ride from Yale University to the Town of Simsbury in Connecticut, the third annual Hudson River loop ride in New Jersey and New York, and an exploration of the Woonasquatucket River Greenway in Rhode Island. Two upcoming rides will go from Trenton to Philadelphia and explore much of our greenway in North Carolina later this month.
These rides are free or discounted for East Coast Greenway Alliance members — and give us a chance to showcase new improvements in our trail and discuss ways we can accelerate progress. The length of our rides vary widely. Just last Thursday during our New England Bike-Walk Summit in Providence, we offered a 5-mile ride showing how a greenway can be part of the uplift of a low-income neighborhood. On a Sunday morning a couple weekends back we brought together two dozen riders to enjoy 50 miles along the Farmington Valley corridor in central Connecticut.
Next week will be our longest bike tour of the year — over 150 miles from the Outer Banks to see new sections of greenway in Wilmington and the Triangle (central North Carolina). You can join us for the last day of this ride as it culminates in a 39-mile Friday afternoon ride from the NC Museum of Art to the Durham Bulls ballpark lawn on October 22nd. Over 60 people have RSVP’d so far and the NC Secretary of Transportation, Gene Conti, will address the finale!

It will be so nice when this trail is completed – the bike ride from North Carolina near Wilmington, down through Myrtle Beach and Charleston will pass some great country and a lot of great places to stop for the night in Wilmington and Oak Island, and the North Myrtle Beach resorts are great places to stop for a day or two no matter what time of year it is – but especially in the summer, and then on down south. It’ll be nice once it is all the way done through the South!
